It's about 3 months left until ZineQuest 4 and I've decided to make something fairly ambitious this time compared to my other published works.

I've spent the past week thinking about what I want to make and people who know me wouldn't be surprised to hear that I settled for making a pirate zine. At first I figured I'd make a pretty straightforward hexcrawl/dungeon based on Treasure Island. I spent a couple of days brainstorming for that and making lists for what I want in it, etc. I ended up with a several pages long idea document and over 100 names for locations, items, creatures, ships, etc. The system was going to be Cairn, Knave, or possibly Old School Essentials.

But then I thought to myself; What if I didn't make a generic adventure this time? There are already so many good ones out there. What if I tried making something a bit more unique and memorable than "Treasure Haul Island #99"?

So I threw away all the ideas (for now) and started on a clean slate. Even though I'm absolutely terrible at painting, I picked up the brush and what started as the fairly generic pirate town of Salthaven eventually turned into this town for Troika!:

Now, I'm still not sure if this is something I want to go through with. This is truly weird after all. But at least I think it helped with getting my creative juices flowing again. Now just to figure out how I can make something that is not too weird but still feels like it's mine.
